Working your way up to being excellent at layups is the basic rule. Consider crawling, walking, jogging, and running. Improve your coordination so that you can consistently perform the skill, try the Mikan drill. This entails working on your coordination and muscle memory by repetition. First stand three inches in front of the rim with a basketball in your hands. Now using correct footwork take two steps (left/right or right/left depending on what side your on) and lift basketball up towards the hoop. Secondly aim for the upper Right or left right angle on the backboard square above the rim. And lastly gently bounce ball off Right or left angle of the backboard into the hoop. Once ball returns to ground quickly switch sides and use your opposite hand and foot. Its okay if you miss at first but only count the makes. You should develop and perfect your newly gained talent by practicing and drilling it (preferably 25 reps on each hand & foot).This is one of the most basic but extremely effective basketball layup drills for beginners.

The sole purpose of player one is to send the ball to player two. On the three-point line, player one begins with the ball on top of the free-throw circle. Player two takes the field from the baseline. Player two sprints to the free-throw line’s end, does a horizontal sidestep to the 3-point line, and then shouts for the ball. Cut layup drill is one of the simplest basketball layup drills for beginners.
Once player two has the ball, he does a “rip,” which entails swinging the ball low before dribbling to make it more difficult for the defender to steal the ball in a real game situation, then he dribbles towards the basket at a 45-degree angle and makes a basketball layup, before passing to the next person in line. After a few minutes, player one will be replaced by another player.  Another Variation of this drill is V cut layup drill for beginners. Its when a player passes a ball to another player swiftly moves to the outside of the 3 point line, receives a pass from  player that he/she passed to in beginning, shift his/her hips and body to the basket, and explodes to the rim for a layup on either the left or right hand side.

Line Basketball Layup Drill

This exercise is identical to the 2 Line Lay-up Drill; however, the players are divided into three lines, one for shooting, one for guarding, and one for rebounding. The drill begins with the first shooter dribbling up to the basket and attempting a layup as the first defender attempts to block him. If the shooter misses, he or she will only be able to take one more shot. This is one of the best basketball layup drills for beginners.
The rebound will be grabbed by the first rebounder, who will then give it to the next shooter. The rebounder will proceed to the defending line, the shooter to the rebounding line, and the defender to the shooting line. Switch the shooting line to the left after a few minutes so players may practice their left-handed lay-ups, but the defensive line will remain the same.
